Symposium Follow-up Activities

Life Safety Code Task Force

As a follow up to the CMS/Pioneer Network sponsored symposium, and with support from the Hulda B. and Maurice L. Rothschild Foundation, Pioneer Network is establishing a National Life Safety Code Task Force that will be charged with (1) reviewing the pertinent sections of the current Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) in light of Creating Home recommendations and current research; and (2) recommending changes to the LSC that would support the creation of home in the nursing home. The Task Force's recommendations will be submitted to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) by August 1, 2009. The Task Force will also identify further research needed in this important area.

In keeping with the guidelines used for the symposium, CMS-recognized national stakeholder organizations and experts concerned about the physical environment of the nursing home will be invited to participate in the Life Safety Code Task Force. Other interested parties will have the opportunity for input through the Pioneer Network website after the project launches in January 2009.  For more information, please contact Cathy Lieblich at
