Symposium Follow-up Activities

CMS and Pioneer Network Pre-conference Session at AAHSA Annual Conference

A full day Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Pioneer Network Pre-conference Session was held at the 2008 American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on October 11, 2008. The session focused on the April 2008 CMS/Pioneer Network Symposium on culture change and the physical environment requirements and follow up activities currently being planned or implemented at the state and national levels. Priority findings and action items from the symposium were discussed by CMS and Pioneer Network representatives followed by a discussion of efforts on the part of state agencies and state culture change coalitions in advocating for changes needed to support long-term care environments that are truly home for the people that live there. Resources such as the NHRegsPlus website and information about the household model as well as low cost environmental modifications to existing buildings were discussed. Throughout the day, participants and speakers actively shared ideas and experiences to come together in focusing on the next steps for the transformation of elder care in communities, states and nationally.
