Re-Discovering An Integrated Life of Well-Being:
Lessons Learned / New Approaches

Steve Shields, President and CEO of Action Pact Holdings, LLC

Steve is an international leader in the creation of the "Household Model." He was formerly the President and CEO of Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan, KS - an internationally known senior living provider that pioneered and shaped the "Household Model" in the 1990s under Steve's leadership.He is the only known development and project consultant within the resident-directed framework who has lived as an operator, a developer, an educator, and consultant.

Steve and LaVrene Norton co-authored the book, "In Pursuit of the Sunbeam, a Practical Guide to Transformation from Institution to Household," that is currently in its third printing and has sold in all 50 states and numerous foreign countries. He is also the co-author of "The Household Model Business Case," a definitive work establishing the viability of this model in long-term care.

Action Pact specializes in organizational transformation and repositioning, architectural design and construction, project development services, financial forecasting and strategic planning for the senior living sector. Steve was a founding board member with the Pioneer Network and is now shaping another partnership for innovative living in Missouri.

In this plenary Steve will reflect on the lessons learned from his own journey in aging; paint a picture of what the future might be like through the "Liberty Project" and other "aging in community" innovations; and challenge us as individuals to live the life we want for our elders so that it is truly person-directed.

Second Wind: Navigating the Passage to a Slower, Deeper and More Connected Life

Dr. Bill Thomas, Founder of The Eden Alternative and THE GREEN HOUSE® Project and Co-Founder of Pioneer Network

Dr. Bill Thomas is an author, entrepreneur, musician, teacher, farmer and physician whose wide-ranging work explores the terrain of human aging. Best known for his health care system innovations, he is a founder of a global non-profit (The Eden Alternative) which works to improve the care provided to older people. He is the creator of The Green House® which Provider Magazine has called the "pinnacle of culture change." Dr. Thomas also developed the Senior ER model of care and is now working to transform the acute care services provided to elders. He is currently a Senior Fellow with AARP's Life Reimagined Institute.

Dr. Thomas' eclectic career has included two decades living off the grid and running a mixed power farming operation (Summer Hill), founding one of the first technology companies to offer clinicians immediate access to outcome data (Rumpelstitlskin), teaching medical students and serving as a founding faculty member of UMBC's Erickson School of Aging. He is also the founder of the influential multi-author blogging platform, A popular public speaker, Dr. Thomas is known for his thoughtful, heartfelt (and Powerpoint-free) approach to engaging with a wide range of audiences.

In his plenary Dr. Thomas will reflect on his recent April to June / 25-city "Second Wind" bus tour of America, as well as his new book bearing the same name. With his mantra of "Slow Down / Go Deeper / Get Connected," he will seek to guide us through the most challenging and fulfilling developmental stage of life.
